CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2023

The Restorative Balcony Garden

BRIEF

The Restorative Balcony Garden demonstrates how to create a space which is environmentally conscious without compromising on aesthetic or quality. The garden showcases how to make the most of a tiny outdoor space, at measuring only 2m x 5m the garden features a pergola, raised planters, a water feature and lounge seating where clients can sit and absorb the nature surrounding them. The garden mixes new materials with carefully selected reclaimed items.

SOLUTION

The planting has been designed to attract pollinators and birdlife into the garden with fragrant trees, climbers and herbs also providing a sensory experience for visitors. A water table doubles up as a birdbath and source of meditative sound. The materials chosen for the garden will soften and age appropriately as the garden matures and establishes. The pergola and raised planters give those sitting on the balcony a sense of seclusion and privacy even in the winter months.

OUTCOME

The garden design has created a sheltered private space in which to relax, repair and restore. The mix of materials, both new and reclaimed are softened by the planting and when night falls, soft lighting illuminates the planting and transforms the space. A ‘Gommaire’ sofa entices visitors to sit and rest within the garden.
