For the 2022 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, we partnered with architectural cabin designers Koto and Hamptons to create a Garden Sanctuary. The concept was to create a structure for home working, exercise, and relaxation that totally transports you away from the stresses of everyday life. The garden was a mindful commute from your backdoor, crossing stepping stones on a babbling brook before arriving at a charred larch deck that takes you into the geometric and sculptural cabin.
The garden features a carbon-neutral small garden cabin with a shou-sugi-ban (charred wood) exterior, so the structure is not just practical but beautiful to look at from the house. The contemporary structure contrasts with rounded glacial boulders, natural stepping stones over trickling water, and a canopy of birch and pine trees. The garden is rich in pollinating plants for wildlife, with densely planted trees to encourage birds into the garden. This is an immersive space to encourage connection with the surrounding power of nature and plants.‘The garden is about taking a typical urban space and smothering it with nature” says designer Tony.
The garden design has created a series of spaces, intended to take us out of our homes, where we can decompress, play, and reconnect. Outside the small yet sculptural structure is a calm and peaceful seating area on the deck, where a single statement chair by ‘Ethimo ’ with a small side table can be found under the dappled shade of the pine and birch trees and amongst the planting. The sounds of water trickling through the garden distracts visitors from the hustle and bustle of their hectic lives. The placement of the cabin provides a place of seclusion and meditation and an immersive space to connect with the surrounding power of nature and plants.
