CLAPHAM

Another Level

BRIEF

This rear garden of a period property in the Old Town area of Clapham was set over two levels and had previously been landscaped to provide a very contemporary and minimalist garden. Our clients brief to us was to provide more of a balance between hard and soft landscaping, linking the levels and using the space more effectively. Our clients wanted to make the space more family friendly and integrate play features into the re-design. Areas for lounging/eating, play, outdoor cooking and creating interest throughout the seasons were also high on the agenda.

SOLUTION

Our design team developed a concept that very subtly divided the garden by creating a journey through soft, elegant planting with beautiful paving materials chosen to provide subtle textural contrasts and a mellow tone that ties in with the period brickwork of the garden walls and house. The basement space has been reconfigured to make more of the space providing a generous outdoor kitchen whilst still making room for greenery to soften the view from the interior. The steel railings have been replaced with contemporary glass balustrade, opening up the view through the space and timber cladding softens the hard walls.

For the children a real lawn provides space to play and a bespoke hardwood playhouse has been designed and built by our team. A slide provides a fun alternative to taking the stairs in the basement and makes clever use of the space. The outdoor lounge area has ample space for generously proportioned comfortable furniture and a contemporary fire bowl.

OUTCOME

The garden design has very successfully connected level changes and the addition of the garden studio. Warm materials provide a timeless finish to the landscaping and soft, textural planting elegantly sits between structural shrubs and trees that break the views through the space.
The often awkward transition from basement space to garden level has been given an effortless connection to the whole garden and feels very much at the heart of the scheme. The beautifully designed clay brick path not only provides a sweeping journey through the space but allows the craftsmanship of our team to be appreciated throughout the space, connecting with other materials and contrasting texturally with the sawn sandstone terrace and steps.
