FULHAM ROOF GARDEN

Rooftop on the river

BRIEF

Our clients had recently moved into a new build property overlooking the river Thames and Barnes Wetlands with panoramic views across London and incredible sunsets. The terrace comprised of three sections of stark paving and glass that wrapped around a central staircase. We were asked to use high quality, robust materials and interesting plants to create areas of the garden for taking in the views with a drink, relaxing in the sun and enjoying dinner parties with family and friends. Our clients also needed to incorporate storage and tactfully disguise pipework, aerials and air conditioning equipment.

SOLUTION

Our design team completed a study of where planting could be added to add privacy and break the wind using robust, exposure tolerant shrubs and trees whilst not impacting on the best vistas from the roof top. The space was then divided into areas best suited for each purpose with the dining section being designed away from the river to create a cosy, secluded space to enjoy long evenings after sunset with protection from the wind surrounded by scented flowers and architectural trees. Storage units are designed to cover existing services and covered with drought and wind resistant alpine planting, interlinking with additional bar tops for taking in alternative views and additional guests when required. A long bar and corner bench surrounding a fire pit dominate the area with the best of the river views and sunsets whilst a colourful corner of planting is built on a raised deck to give a view of the boats and rowers enjoying the river on sunny days with coffee and a newspaper.

OUTCOME

By using dramatic, textured corten steel effect planters this roof garden design has instantly gained warmth and character. The spaces that have been created on the roof terrace whilst consistent in look and feel have very different atmospheres and uses adding to the usability and enjoyment of the investment made to harness the potential of this stunning outdoor area by our clients.

Planting is robust and warm with reliable blues and purples punctuated by warmer and hotter pops of colour from plants such as Salvia ‘Peach Parfait’, Santolina, Kniphofia and a range of alpines. Structural multi-stemmed trees add definition to the planting including Crataegus and Arbutus.
