As part of the house renovation for this property in Hammersmith, a contemporary extension with large glass doors on the rear elevation was designed by Jo Cowen Architects.
The primary goal was to connect indoors and outdoors, designing a generous lounge area and an outdoor kitchen unit that could be easily accessed from the dining room and kitchen facing the rear garden.
A link to the house extension clad with Shou-sugi-ban charred timber is made by repeating the same material throughout the garden in elements like cladding for the boundary fences, ASHP screen and outdoor kitchen.
Complemented by dark concrete slabs used for paving and painted rendered elements in the same range of dark tones, the colour scheme results in a very contemporary look where plants create a beautiful contrast.
A wide and open space is reserved to the generous sitting area to maximise light in the centre of the garden, whilst dense planting wraps around it and is layered at different heights toward the rear of the garden.
Sustainability was a key focus, guiding decisions from re-shaping the existing levels to minimise excavations and material removal, to maximising permeable surfacing choices.
The completed landscape perfectly complements the house and contemporary extension, maximising the space efficiently and integrating practical components, whilst providing ample space for planting and beautiful landscape details.
The planting scheme, featuring lush textures and combining dark-leaf and deep purple flowering species tie the planting to the garden’s darker hardscape elements, resulting in a harmonious and visually stunning outdoor space.
