This garden was designed to replace a previously un-used rooftop at one of the UKs largest teaching hospitals, St George’s Hospital in Tooting. The garden has been designed to be a space for staff, patients, and visitors to use throughout the year as a quiet and peaceful space to reflect and relax whilst being immersed in nature. It is. A calming environment designed to aid recovery and provide a safe space for often difficult conversations.
This small garden demonstrates how raised planters can give a sense of seclusion and proximity to plants and nature turning these underused areas of grey concrete into hidden sanctuaries for people and wildlife. Under a canopy of dappled shade there are a selection of spaces to sit, pause, reflect, and heal. The raised planters are filled with scented and textural plants in a blue and yellow colour scheme as a tribute to the NHS. Composite decking provides a stable and safe surface so the garden can be used throughout the year and in any weather. The GRP planters are lightweight allowing for more volume and larger shrubs, and trees to be planted whilst still being a suitable weight.
The garden design has created a series of intimate spaces for a range of visitors including spaces to sit and work, large groups to meet or individual secluded spaces all immersed in nature and soft landscaping. The tree canopies and layers of planting within the raised planters transport visitors from a dull rooftop in London to a green retreat. All the spaces and connecting walkways are large enough for wheelchairs and with the intent that when larger gardens like this are designed on hospital roof tops, the areas will be large enough for hospital beds to be transported outside.
