JOHN LEWIS SUMMER

BRIEF

John Lewis selected Garden Club London to design and install the roof garden at their flagship Oxford Street branch. Providing a sense of escapism, country garden vibes and authentic horticultural features were the over-arching theme to the brief. Seating to relax with drinks from the bar, as well as more robust dining options, needed to be devised to deliver a flexible and commercially efficient catering arrangement for the rooftop restaurant.

SOLUTION

Dividing the space into separate zones, we created a customer journey that directs visitors through the space, whilst allowing dwell time and places to sit and relax. Flowers, herbs and vegetables sit in reclaimed planters, custom built beds and oversized containers, allowing a full sensory experience that can be amended seasonally. Structural evergreen hedges have been used to divide the space and create outdoor seating booths. A flexible restaurant arrangement allows for cover numbers to be increased in good weather and events to be accommodated in an adaptable and versatile way.

OUTCOME

John Lewis Oxford Street has a truly unique extension of their Oxford Street Store that offers customers a chance to relax and recharge during shopping, as well as the opportunity to dine, book exclusive summer house ‘rooms’ and attend events. Footfall across all floors has increased since the opening of the garden and the features and events of the #gardeningsociety social tag have increased social media engagement, as visitors capture their experiences on camera and share them with friends.
