KENSINGTON

Rooftop Sanctuary

BRIEF

Our clients sought to revitalize their roof terrace, which had fallen into disrepair and become unusable. With a primary residence in the US, they envisioned a relaxing, low-maintenance space that complements their lifestyle. The design needed to accommodate existing building services and pipes that couldn’t be modified, while also considering limited access through a narrow stairway. The goal was to create an inviting retreat with areas for lounging and privacy, harmonizing seamlessly with the architecture of their penthouse.

SOLUTION

For this roof terrace design, we opted for composite decking (millboard) and subframe, which was chosen for its low maintenance properties and resistance to the need for frequent pressure washing due to the absence of a water source. Bespoke GRP planters were crafted to minimize weight while maximizing the use of available space, allowing for a seamless integration with the terrace layout. Additionally, a custom bench with an accompanying table was designed to elegantly wrap around the existing pipework, featuring a hidden removable hatch within the perimeter cladding for convenient access to the service area. This thoughtful approach not only enhances functionality but also creates a harmonious and inviting outdoor space.

OUTCOME

The terrace is transformed into a captivating, versatile space defined by bespoke arches that introduce vertical planting and draw the eye along its length. Thoughtfully placed lighting extends its use into the evening, casting intricate shadows on the timber cladding and across the foliage. A careful blend of evergreen and seasonal plants ensures the terrace remains lush and welcoming year-round, creating an inviting retreat whenever the clients are in residence.
