This large property in rural Buckingham had a great backdrop of mature woods and naturalised meadows but around the house, the planting and hard landscaping were tired and failed to provide a connection to the surrounding environment. Our client also wanted to improve the entrance to their existing swimming pool and create a new entertaining area. The site was open to the elements, so the planting had to be robust enough to survive.
Using the existing architecture of the house, we created a network of paths and planting beds to bring structure and soft landscaping closer to the house whilst still maintaining areas for seating and dining. Parasol trees and specimen multi-stem trees help connect this new space to the existing woods of the garden backdrop. By identifying species that we knew already grew in the woods, we could further emphasize the ornamental vs natural character of the two areas. The soft landscaping included an intricate mix of natural and soft textures with evergreen clipped topiary providing year-round structure and a rich composition of planting layers between the tree canopies and the paving.
The final design provided our clients with a bespoke louvred canopy creating a snug and private entertaining and dining area, an outdoor seating area under a canopy of multiple trees, and framed views looking out from within the house. A mix of clay pavers and natural stone in various formats helps delineate specific areas and views out to the existing landscape.
