The Lasting Appeal of Clay Pavers: Beauty, Durability, and Sustainability in Garden Design.

When most people think of garden design the first thing that usually comes to mind is plants but well thought out soft landscaping is only one half of a winning design. Hard landscaping that not only enhances the horticultural aspect of the garden but sings in its own way is essential to a well rounded garden design. Whether it’s through decking, gravel, brick or paving, incorporating hardscape elements allows for balance, giving the garden year-round interest and usability, even when plants are out of season.

One material we have seen grow in popularity over the last couple of years is clay pavers, probably due to their versatility and aesthetic appeal. Here at Garden Club London we love incorporating clay pavers into our Garden designs when we can.

For those of you that might still be on the fence about these gorgeous blocks, we’ve put together a brief list on how and why you might use clay pavers.

1. Aesthetic Appeal

Clay pavers offer a wide range of versatile design options, with a broad palette of natural hues that retain their vibrancy, coupled with various patterns like herringbone, basket weave, and circular, the possibilities for creative designs are endless. Add in varying textures and sizes and you can create unique focal points, pathways, patios, and borders. In a recent trip to the Vande Moortel factory our Designer Christina Cobb got up close and personal with an array of styling options such as angular bricklaying, clay cladding and different grout options; the experience really “reframed how I think about using their products”.

2. Sustainability

Clay pavers are known for their durability and longevity, withstanding harsh weather conditions without fading or cracking making them a great long term option for your garden. The materials used to make clay pavers are also simple and sustainable: clay, water, and heat making them an environmentally friendly option as well.

3. Low Maintenance

Once installed, clay pavers require very little upkeep. Unlike other materials, they don’t require regular sealing or cleaning, and they maintain their color without fading. Their natural composition allows them to age gracefully, blending together well over time. Plus in the rare event that a paver is damaged, individual units can easily be replaced without disrupting the overall design.
