A signature period property on the ‘Toast Rack’ backing onto Wandsworth Common undergoing extensive refurbishment and extension to create a luxurious state of the art family home, we were commissioned to carry out a full design and planning package with follow-up build and aftercare. For this truly one-of-a-kind project our clients asked us to harmonise the modern architecture and finishes of the interiors with a lush and abundant garden space that flowed seamlessly from inside the house and into the views beyond of the common. Our clients required a robust level of design detail and integration with over twenty stakeholders in the project from Architect to security engineers. We were asked to develop a series of spaces including a family garden, basement courtyard, dining area, and various bespoke features to add interest and practical solutions.
The garden design had to consider a number of planning requirements and is mainly situated on a basement roof slab so a number of zones were developed that not only gave the space a wide range of uses and vistas but also carefully considered weight loading and drainage practicalities.
Our design developed a series of angular planters throughout the main garden space inspired by natural rock outcrops and the geometric lines used in the architecture of the house. These are able to accommodate extensive root zone material for sustaining lots of planting and interest throughout the seasons.
A large lawn sits above the basement pool and leads you through the planting to a bespoke pavilion that houses a high-specification outdoor kitchen, bar, and dining area which then leads you to a secluded adventure garden for children to explore and let off steam.
A series of small journeys have been created throughout the garden, each with its own individual atmosphere after ultimately wowing you as you walk through the front door and see the stunning garden unfold through a glazed wall, introduced by an indoor and outdoor triple height green wall. For the architects they would not have imagined a more fitting design for the house and for our client the garden provides the perfect balance between practical and beautiful outdoor space for modern living with a family.
