For this garden, we were fortunate enough that our client brought us in to produce a garden design for this unusual corner plot at a very early stage of a remodelling and extension project for a Victorian property in Wandsworth. This meant that details could be discussed with the architect and homeowner to help produce a scheme that filled the clients brief and married perfectly with the proposed flow and style of the refurbishment.
One of the main criteria for the design was to introduce privacy from overlooking windows and loft conversions. We selected a combination of evergreen and deciduous trees and integrated these into the main planting scheme, carefully integrating the height so that the large trees required did not dominate the scheme. We also used evergreen multi-stemmed trees to act as a visual distraction when viewed from various points in the house. The also make a stunning night time feature with the addition of a sensitively designed lighting scheme. In a relatively small space, it was important to allow visual breaks in the flow of the scheme and this has been achieved with an ‘L’ shaped artificial lawn that provides an all-weather surface for play and relaxation whilst allowing the planting and geometry to be appreciated from all angles
Whilst the wrap around layout of the house dominates the space it also provided a great opportunity to create an outdoor space that really flows with the interior of the home and each window and door was considered carefully for views onto the garden to maximise the effect of the garden and create as much atmosphere as possible. As soon as you walk through the front door the greenery and structure of the garden draw you in and can be appreciated from all rooms in the house giving the effect that a house sits in a green oasis rather than a garden being attached to a house.
To add balance to the strong geometric lines of the architecture of the property, metallic feature walls were integrated into the design to add visual interest and a link to the structural details of our clients home. These structures are built from concrete with a hard-wearing porcelain cladding finished in a dark steel effect. For a superior finish to the whole garden, the boundaries have been clad and finished in contemporary horizontal batons of varying widths. The batons have been individually installed and painted in Farrow and Ball ‘Railings’ to compliment interior finishes of the home making the interior and exterior feel as one scheme and enhancing the sense of space inside and out.
Within the garden layout we have designed three areas for seating. The main dining area is on an oak effect composite deck at the rear of the house, this also provides and area for working outside adjacent to the study. A secluded area with lounge chairs and a low table sits outside the kitchen and is the perfect place for morning coffee or evening drinks. To further add a sense of privacy we designed a bespoke cantilevered pergola that accommodates a hanging swing chair, surrounded by trees and plants this is the perfect place to read a book or relax at any time of day.
