On the north seashore of Kent, this small rear garden of a beautifully renovated house overlooking the beach needed a make-over to measure up to the fantastic interiors. Our client requests were to replace the existing decking, update steps and levels for better fruition of the patio and access to the garden, to include an outdoor kitchen and dining area, and to interface with the new garden studio being built at the rear end of the garden. The planting also needed improvements to highlight some of the existing mature specimens and replace some of the plants that weren’t suitable for this coastal climate.
The original decking was replaced with a composite solution, much more stable in coastal environments with extreme weather, leveling, and extending the patio. Stepping down in the central section of the garden, soft gravel surfacing and maritime planting rich in evergreen and scented herbs frame a contemporary concrete outdoor kitchen. Boundaries have also been clad with reclaimed timber to provide an informal look and add detail. Finally, a permeable clay brick paving area links to the glazed front of the beautiful garden studio, with a generous dining table and a relaxed lounge area complete with a fire pit.
This garden was transformed from an overgrown and impractical space into a small gem that really enhances the property and allows our clients to make the most of this compact outdoor space. Small but meaningful nods to materials and planting typical of coastal locations anchor the garden in its environment, whilst the many details included in the hard landscaping ensure the space reads as a contemporary room that belongs with the house and studio.
