The terrace’s deteriorated, slippery decking had rendered it unusable. Visible from the open-plan kitchen, living, and dining areas, the space needed to be transformed into a safe, inviting extension of the home. Despite its compact size (2m x 7m), the design required a lounge area, dining space, and outdoor kitchen, necessitating careful planning. Additionally, a low-maintenance, resilient design was essential to minimize upkeep and ensure successful plant care.
To seamlessly incorporate all desired elements, bespoke planters in various shapes and heights were commissioned to fill spaces between the furniture and the outdoor kitchen, bringing greenery into every corner. A compact modular kitchen was chosen to maximize functionality without overwhelming the terrace’s limited footprint. Along with carefully selected furniture to match the client’s aesthetic and to ensure an efficient layout. For ease of maintenance, an integrated irrigation system was added to water all planters automatically, and Millboard decking replaced the rotting wood, eliminating the need for frequent cleaning.
Every detail of the terrace was optimized to meet the client’s vision. The raised decking provides a seamless flow from the interior, and a cedar screen enhances privacy. Ambient lighting, in-planter illumination, and a wall-mounted heater extend usability into the evening and cooler months. An elegant frame integrated within the planters supports evergreen Jasmine, which will provide dappled shade and added privacy as it grows.
